Who can make the sun shine? Bill Whorral.
Just when the grayest, dreariest, freezing-est part of an Indiana winter threated to smack me down this mysterious cigar box arrived. The anticipation of opening it was palpable. My fingers were shaking as I pointed my trusty phone camera toward this object of curiosity.
And out jumped a treasure trove of literary zines:
Larry stories from Billtown!
Titles on the table from L-R include: BILLTOWN: We Are Just A Couple of Miles from Art!, A Brother Larry Drew Mystrey, Well, It Sure Smells Like Art, and The Larry Observer.
Also included are a couple of articles: "Suspect threatens to eat officers (Lafayette, IN), and a poem from the opinion pages titled "No black Santa at Christmas" a poem lamenting the lack of diversity in Christmas displays in the local park.
Below I've included an excerpt from It Sure Smells Like Art, from a story titled FREE LIT.:
FREE LIT
Cicero: My friend Will, for free will is the highest wall for those without riches to bank and vault the Wall street of dreams, in good God's name, what say the news on yonder ports like Washington and Maine?
Will: I see the eye of Newt has strayed from his own bad brew of broken tongue like a rudderless ship of state, he has rung in the new year on his ladder to unseat the dark knight on high white yonder throne, yet his rungs do appear to have splintered at every step he takes wherever he doth roam. For his alliances with evil empires have cast him the light of the darkest night of all. He has forgotten his own village and cannot run his race back home, while his hang abouts plead now for him a greasy stinking bone. Bones he already has and from his closets they do tumble, moldy coins an silver skulls that quiver and they mumble.
Cicero: My namesake in the land of stinking onions, far under the elevated and rotten rich that soil office bought, the clan of the elephant shall once again not be the one that's sought.
Will: Though predicts then the pachyderm shall be the stubborn and appear to forget, whilst the donkey shall hear the better with smaller ears I'll bet. That which is colored gray but only sees in black and white, for subtlety is not a load the thickish skin can alight, but only trumpet with Holy damned angry and great sinful zeal. While built to carry a greater a load than many, it seems it's goal is to drop great loads for others to shovel while paying them but pennies while in their tents they hovel."
We are just a couple miles from art...
